SUMMARY: This is the position of Astrophysicist (Post-Doctoral Research Fellow) in the Atomic and Molecular Physics Division. The purpose of this position is to work on observational and modeling research related to the detection and characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres.


1. Conduct a program of research and scholarship in the area of the detection and characterization of exoplanetary atmospheres under the supervision and direction of the Principal Investigator.

2. Formulate and conduct original programs of independent astronomical research, with an emphasis on understanding exoplanetary atmospheres.

3. Engage in the dissemination of the results of the research by, for example, preparing papers for publication in scientific journals, and preparing and presenting findings at scientific meetings, as required.

4. Support, as required, the development of proposals for research funding.

5. Support observations to collect data for different projects.

6. Engage in the wider research and scholarly activities of your research group, School and Institute.

7. Perform other scientific duties identified by the Supervisor such as:

Contribute to the ongoing "ACCESS Survey Program on the Magellan Telescopes" by (a) undertaking observations using the IMACS instrument on the Magellan Baade Telescope, (b) leading the analysis of datasets, (c) refining that data analysis pipeline used to reduce the data, and (d) fitting theoretical exoplanet atmosphere models to the observations.

Contribute to the ongoing "HST and JWST Programs" by (a) leading the analysis of datasets, (b) refining data reduction and analysis pipelines, and (c) fitting theoretical exoplanet atmosphere models to the observations.


Basic Requirements:

A. Degree: in one or a combination of astronomy, physics, mathematics, space science, or electronics. The course work must have included differential and integral calculus and 12 semester hours in astronomy and/or physics. OR

B. Combination of education and experience -- at least 30 semester hours of courses equivalent to a major in any combination of astronomy, space science, physics, mathematics, and electronics, with required course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic entry qualification requirements, applicants must have specialized experience and/or directly related education in the amounts shown below:

a) Master's or equivalent graduate degree; or

b) 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to the grade 09 level that should demonstrate the ability to work with spectroscopic data and extract information from planetary systems based on transit fits. or

c) Combination of successfully completed graduate level education and experience equivalent to the above.
