The Heavy Mobile Equipment Repairer will support the maintenance of the vehicles that support the functions of a scientific facility that is in 24 hour, 365 day/year operation at a remote site that includes mountain facilities accessible only by an unpaved mountain road.


  1. Performs maintenance, investigates the cause of malfunctions, and makes repairs-including welding--to heavy mobile equipment and vehicles such as cranes, loaders, graders, backhoes, dump/plow trucks, water trucks and lifts having mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical systems, controls, or features not commonly found on automobiles and ordinary transport trucks. Determines when parts should be cleaned and adjusted, or require replacement with standard parts.
  2. Performs preventative maintenance and repair on automotive vehicles to ensure their safety for mountain use.
  3. Utilizes a wide variety of test and diagnostic equipment such as automotive diagnostic scanners, tire pressure monitoring scanners, hydrometers, compression and pressure gauges, calipers, feeler gauges, micrometers, voltage testers, and amp meters to analyze malfunctions and test both components and overall vehicle operation and performance.
  4. Assists senior heavy automotive equipment mechanics in disassembling, repairing, and assembling major systems, components, and operating mechanisms and/or the complete overhaul and repair of major systems such as engines, transmissions, drive lines, and hydraulic components.
  5. Operates heavy equipment such as forklifts, man lifts, front-end loaders, backhoes, cranes, etc. in open areas and on level, hilly and/or mountainous terrain to move earth, rocks, sand, stumps and other equipment. Utilizes forklifts and cranes to offload and store freight deliveries. May be required to transport delicate optical and scientific equipment, or transport liquid nitrogen Dewar’s to telescope sites.
  6. Performs a variety of routine tasks such as delivery and pick-up of light and heavy objects at the Administrative Complex and mountain facilities, fueling all types of vehicles and heavy equipment on the mountain, and performing minor servicing of all types of vehicles and heavy equipment. Serves as an alternate driver for Tucson pick up of goods.
  7. Performs other related duties as assigned.
